What you can do

Ideas for how to participate and for energy efficiency

Arms around a tree

There are many ways in which you can get involved with us to improve the environment.

We help local people organise community litter picks. Apply for a grant from the Cambridgeshire Community Clean Up Fund.

As part of our recycling services start home composting with our help and a low cost bin.

Tell us about environmental problems you see such as land or air pollution.

Sign up to the Cambridge climate change charter. Groups and organisations can hire our exhibition, which provides further explanation of the causes of climate change and its implications for Cambridge.

Groups can also apply for grants for neighbourhood projects that have a direct, lasting and noticeable improvement to the appearance or ease of use of an area or street.

If you run a business, big or small, we have advice on how environmental issues can benefit your business and make it more sustainable.

You could volunteer to help maintain our local nature reserves or tend an allotment.

For the youngest amongst us we support a recyclable nappy scheme and free trees for newborn babies.

There are a number of ways we help cyclists in Cambridge. Cycle parking and lockers, details of routes and borrowing bike trailers and pushchairs at two locations.

Join in with one of the volunteer organisations we help fund.

How to save energy

Save energy and money with these simple, no cost and low cost actions:

  • switch off lights in unoccupied rooms
  • don't leave appliances on standby, turn them off
  • use lids on pans when cooking
  • don't over fill the kettle, use only as much water as you need
  • turn down the thermostat by one degree and save up to 10% on fuel bills

Install energy efficient products:

We can help with small energy saving improvement grants.

You can get further advice on energy efficient products and grants to help you improve your home from us and from the Energy Saving Trust.

Renewable energy

You could ask your electricity supplier to change your power supply to a green tariff where electricity is produced through renewable technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels.

Green electricity marketplace gives details and comparisons of green tariffs available in the eastern England region.

Solar water heating systems can provide over half of a household's hot water requirements over the year.

You can get more information on renewable energy technology and fuels from the National Energy Foundation and the Centre for Alternative Technology.
