The United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity.
Biodiversity - the variety of life on earth - is essential for sustaining the natural living systems and ecosystems that provide us with food, fuel, health, wealth, and other vital services.
Humans are part of this biodiversity and have the power to protect or destroy it. Currently, our activities are destroying biodiversity at alarming rates.
These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life-support systems we rely on.
To prevent them we need to reflect on our achievements to safeguard biodiversity and focus on the urgent challenges ahead.
You can read more information on the Biodiversity is life website, which is provided by the UK partnership supporting the International Year of Biodiversity.
Local action and events
The Council will be working with partner organisations to raise awareness, celebrate our local wildlife and take practical action to halt the loss of local biodiversity.
Our eight local nature reserves help protect some of the best wildlife habitats in the city.
Details of events throughout to be held in and around Cambridge throughout 2010 will follow.
