About our strategies, activities and partnerships

We deliver a wide range of services aimed at protecting and enhancing the local environment and improving the quality of life of the Cambridge population.

This work, much of which is carried out in partnership with other sectors of the community, goes a long way to achieving many of our environmental objectives.

Cambridge Environmental Framework

The Cambridge Environmental Framework describes what these objectives are and outlines how Cambridge City Council intends to make Cambridge a more sustainable city.

The Cambridge Environment Report 2009-10 describes the progress made with delivering the objectives contained in the Cambridge Environmental Framework.

The actions that Cambridge City Council will undertake this year to fulfil the objectives contained in the Environmental Framework are outlined in the annual Environmental Action Programme.

Management, maintenance and improvements

Environmental improvements offer grants to neighbourhood projects that have a direct, lasting and noticeable improvement to the appearance, or ease of use of an area or street.

The Historic Environment team are responsible for the quality of the physical environment of Cambridge. They manage and safeguard historic buildings and trees.

Our planning department promotes the use of renewable energy technologies in new developments, and sets out policies and site specific proposals for the development and use of land in Cambridge. The supplementary planning document on sustainable design and construction provides guidance to applicants of major planning applications.

The environmental protection team, including environmental health, deals with air, land, water and noise pollution.

Our waste management team manages and delivers the city's refuse, recycling and green waste collection services, as well as a scheme to deal with abandoned vehicles.

Our environmental services team also maintains the city's parks and playgrounds (over 500 acres of land comprising parks, commons and open spaces, and recreation grounds) and, with the City Rangers, keeps public spaces clean by removing litter, graffiti and flyposting.

More than 100 acres of land provide over 1,700 allotment plots in the city. Management of these is mostly carried out by local allotment societies.

Our housing department helps with small energy saving improvement grants.
