Environmental Project Grants
Apply for a project grant
Please email us or telephone 01223 457046 to request an application pack.
Project grant applications are considered on a quarterly basis by a grants panel, made up of councillors (one from each of the main political parties represented on the council).
After the grants panel has met, you will be notified of the outcome of your application, usually by post, by no later than three weeks after the deadline has passed.
If your application has been successful, your letter will include details of the amount of capital and/or revenue funding your project has been awarded, and the terms and conditions of the grant. You are required to sign your acceptance of the grant and its term and conditions and return a tear-off slip on the letter.
The grant funding can be paid either via a cheque (we will need details of a named person) or directly into a nominated bank account (we will need the name of the bank, account name, account number, and sort code).
At the end of the financial year, you will be asked to submit a report outlining expenditure of your grant and demonstrating your project outputs.
Projects will also be required to complete a two-page case study (a template will be provided) to be used in our publicity activities.
The next deadline for submission of applications is 11th December 2009 (you should hear the outcome of your application by 18th December 2009).
The last application deadline for the current financial year will be 26th February 2010 with the outcomes known by 19th March 2010.
Core funding grants
Your organisation will have to give support to the council's environmental objectives; read our Environmental Framework for more information on these.
You do not have to meet all of these objectives to qualify for one of our grants but the more objectives it addresses, the stronger your application is likely to be.
We do not set a limit on the amount of funding for which your organisation can apply. The level of this funding is determined by:
- the extent to which the organisation's work supports the Council's environmental objectives
- the extent to which the organisation demonstrates their need for funding from Sustainable City
- the total amount of funding available in any given financial year
Previous awards have varied between £500 and £20,000 per organisation.
We can only meet a proportion of the total costs of your project or organisation. We cannot provide 100% funding.
We require you to provide match funding. Sources of match funding can come from applications to other organisations, in-kind contributions (for example, services at no charge), donations and partnership funding.
You do need to be a member of an established group or official organisation to apply for core funding. This is because core funding is usually paid in regular amounts and over several months or years, so accounts and financial information are required.
Applications for core funding are invited once a year, usually in October/November, to consider awards for the following financial year.
We make recommendations to the environment scrutiny committee (usually in January) on which organisations to support, and to what extent. The committee will make a provisional decision on the awards and will confirm their decision later, once the budget for the following financial year has been approved (usually in March).
Grant funding can be paid by cheque to a nominated person or bank account, or paid straight into a group’s bank account through the electronic BACS payment system.
Please contact us for details on how to apply for core funding.
