The 2010 Cambridge Environment Festival ran from 12-26 June, and this year it had a theme - biodiversity – to mark the UN International Year of Biodiversity.

Events included the free Biodiversity Fair and Family Fun Day at Lammas Land on Sunday 13 June, with activities including natural art workshops and guided walks of Paradise local nature reserve and Sheeps Green/Coe Fen county wildlife site.

We also ran a photographic competition in the run-up to the festival, and environmental film showings, the annual pub quiz, walks, talks and many other events took place over the fifteen days of the festival.

Photography competition

A 'Nature in Cambridge' photographic competition was launched in the run-up to the Environment Festival to celebrate the UN International Year of Biodiversity.

We asked Cambridge residents to send in their digital images of nature in Cambridge.

Winning entries for the two age groups, under-16s and 16 and over, were chosen by a panel of three judges – from John Lewis, Cambridge Camera Club and the council.

The joint under-16 winners, Jamie Hennessey and Ravi Suresh, won with their image Tree Vision. Each received £50 to spend in the John Lewis camera department and a personal glow-worm walk with their families at Cherry Hinton chalk pits, courtesy of the Wildlife Trust.

Julie Cutter won the 16-and-over category with her image Snow Berries, and received £100 to spend in John Lewis camera department and a day of digital photography tuition with local photographer Ann Miles, courtesy of Cambridge Camera Club.

The winners were announced on Sunday 20 June at the environment event at Milton Country Park, which also hosted an exhibition of the finalist's entries.

International Year of Biodiversity

The council will be involved in a variety of events throughout the year, promoting and celebrating our region's biodiversity. Look out for more information on the International Year of Biodiversity page and in local press.
