Abandoned shopping trolleys have a negative impact on the quality of the local environment and can be hazardous to pedestrians, cyclists and road users.
They can also attract fly-tipping and antisocial behaviour.
In 2007, the council implemented a new initiative to remove abandoned trolleys from the streets of Cambridge.
The initiative came about as part of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005.
Report an adandoned trolley
You can email reports about abandoned shopping trolleys to streetenforcement@cambridge.gov.uk or telephone 458282.
Please include the location of the trolley, when you saw it, which store it is from and how many there are.
Action
When we receive a report about an abandoned trolley, the relevant store or trolley collection agent is notified and given until 5pm the following day to remove the trolley.
If the store fails to recover the trolley, or is unable to, we will remove and impound the trolley.
Once impounded, the store is given six weeks in which to claim the trolley. After this time the trolley will be recycled and the store will be charged for the cost of the collection and disposal.
We immediately impound any hazardous trolleys that are abandoned in the road or in play areas. Trolleys abandoned with fly-tipped rubbish will also be immediately impounded.
