How we can help your business recycle or dispose of waste

Trade waste

We offer commercial waste and recycling collection services and can provide bins and bags in a variety of sizes to accommodate any business need.

Collections can be arranged for general waste, cardboard, mixed glass or mixed recycling that includes paper, cans and plastic bottles.

Charges are based on the size of bin and frequency of collections, with reduced collection rates for recyclable materials.

If you have recycling collections you can usually reduce the frequency of your general waste collections, saving your business money.

We are happy to visit your business to discuss the service that best meets your needs, budget and storage facilities.

For further information please email the Commercial Waste Team at enquiries@cambridge.gov.uk or telephone 01223 458284.

Recycling collections

We are now able to collect commingled recycling as well as separate collections of cardboard and mixed glass at very competitive rates.

These collections are ideally suited for shops, pubs, restaurants and clubs, and can save you money on your waste disposal.

If bin storage is a problem we can offer collections of loose cardboard or provide one small mixed recycling bin enabling you to put paper, can and tins, plastic bottles, cardboard and glass all in one bin or reduce the size of your general waste bin saving you money.

Recycling collections are much cheaper than general waste collections that have to be sent to landfill.

Some benefits of recycling to your business include:

  • saving money on waste collections
  • ensuring compliance with the pre-treatment of waste regulation
  • reducing your carbon footprint
  • helping you to achieve ISO accreditation
  • improved public relations

Blue commercial waste bins

Most trade waste can be put into these bins, with the exception of heavy or dangerous substances such as rubble or clinical waste.

These bins must be stored off the highway other than at collection time.

Our blue trade-waste bins come in the following sizes: 140, 240, 360, 500, 660, 770 or 1,100 litres, to suit your available storage space.

If you would like to have a lock for your trade-waste bin, this can be arranged free of charge.

Blue trade waste bags

The blue commercial-waste bag service operates as an alternative to bin collections, and may be appropriate for those businesses with either limited storage space or only small quantities of waste.

These bags can be purchased at a cost of £26 per roll of 20 bags, which includes the cost of collection and disposal.

To purchase trade waste sacks contact our customer services team.

You will need to complete the contract paperwork in order to receive collections from your business address, and you should retain this paperwork for a minimum of two years.

In the city centre bags are collected between 9 and 10am. Please ensure that bags are only placed out thirty minutes prior to the collection times and are not left out overnight.

Additional trade waste

If required, an additional collection of trade waste can be arranged for a small additional charge. Please contact our customer services team to arrange this.

Excess waste will not be removed without prior arrangement.

If you require a review of your collections, a visit can be arranged by our after-sales coordinator at your convenience.

Skips

We can provide large link tips that measure 18 cubic metres. These can be delivered and removed for a charge of £150.

Legislation

The 'Duty of Care' requires all businesses, whatever size, to take all reasonable steps to keep waste safe:

  • waste must be stored safely, securely and must not cause harm to people or pollution to the environment
  • waste must be contained in a suitable container, ie. waste cannot fall out, blow away or escape from the receptacle provided
  • all businesses must ensure that the person or company removing waste is either a local authority or licensed waste carrier and that the waste is being taken to a facility permitted by the Environment Agency
  • businesses must provide a written description of the waste to the person who removes it. This is know as a Controlled Waste Transfer Notice (CWTN) and must be completed by both persons involved in the transfer. This paperwork is provided free of charge for collections with Cambridge City Council

It is illegal and a breach of the Duty of Care to:

  • take business waste to a Household Waste Recycling Centre, eg. Milton or Thriplow
  • present business waste for collection by the domestic crew or outside of a CWTN.
  • fly-tip waste
  • burn waste

Breaches of the Duty of Care may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) or a fine.

Please note that the Business Rate charge does not cover the removal of waste from your business premises.
