Flats recycling service

A shared recycling bin as per option 2

If you live in a flat, whether it is managed by the council, a housing association or a private owner, we can provide you with recycling collections. If your block of flats does not have any recycling facilities, please contact us using the details at the bottom of the page. Please have the details of your managing agent to hand.

Types of facilities we provide

There are three different types of recycling facilities which we provide for flats. We assess each block individually to decide which is most suitable, depending on vehicle access, storage space and other factors.

Option 1 – Individual recycling bins

Each flat has its own blue and green recycling bins which are emptied fortnightly. Residents need to place their bins at a designated group collection point, or in some cases at the kerbside, on collection day. You can find out which day your bins are emptied here. You can find details of what materials can be recycled on the following poster:

Option 2 – Shared recycling bins

An area or bin store on-site is designated for shared recycling bins, which are normally large bins with four wheels. You can recycle exactly the same materials as in individual recycling bins. Some flats may not have space for green bins. You do not normally have to put large shared bins out for collection - they are collected from the bin store.

Option 3 – Recycling box

For flats above shops or other areas where outside storage for containers is severely limited, recycling boxes may be provided which can be stored inside the flat. Residents need to place the box at the kerbside on collection day. You can recycle the same materials as in a blue bin. Brown paper sacks may be provided as an alternative to a green bin. You can find details of what materials can be recycled on the following poster:

Flats with existing recycling facilities

Some flats have shared recycling points for separate materials – one bin for cans, one for paper etc, instead of bins for mixed recycling. These facilities will stay in place until flats that do not currently have any facilities have had them installed, as we want to ensure everyone has some means of recycling. Eventually all facilities at flats will change over to blue bins for mixed recycling.
