How to dispose of large items such as fridges, freezers and mattresses

Bulky waste

There are a number of ways to get rid of large unwanted items:

Good condition - pass on to someone else

Broken or bad condition - recycle or dispose

  • The City Council is able to collect many bulky items of waste. There is a charge for this service that must be paid in advance - see below.
  • You can take all bulky household items to the large Recycling Centres off the A10 near Milton and off the A505 near Thriplow, free of charge.

Bulky waste collections

We can collect many items including domestic fridges and freezers (not from businesses), large quantities of flattened cardboard (either one-off or regular collections), bulky garden waste (bundled or in boxes or bags) and furniture.

You can pay by card over the telephone on 01223 457000, or by card, cash or cheque in person at the Mill Road depot.

The charge for collecting bulky waste depends on how many items there are. For example, a bed and a mattress would be counted as two items.

Please note that these prices do not apply to hazardous waste and may vary for garden waste depending on the types of waste included.
