Request a new bin

How to order a replacement or additional bin or switch to a smaller bin

Green bin

You can use our form to request a new bin online.

You can also visit the customer service centre, telephone 01223 458282, or email enquiries@cambridge.gov.uk.

Please tell us:

  • your name
  • your address
  • your telephone number
  • what sort of bin you need
  • what size bin you need (small or standard, see below)
  • why you need a new bin

A small wheelie bin measures 107cm x 48cm x 55.5cm and has a 140 litre capacity. A standard wheelie bin measures 107cm x 58cm x 74cm and has a 240 litre capacity. All bins are available in either size.

For health and safety reasons bins can only be delivered and not collected from the council.

If your bin is missing we would firstly advise you to make sure that it hasn't been left outside another property by mistake.

We may be able to help you mend your bin if it has broken wheels or a broken or missing lid.

Please note that it can sometimes take up to six weeks to receive a replacement bin. Customer services can advise current estimated delivery timescales when you order a new bin.

Black bins

A new black bin costs £50 for a standard bin (240 litres) and £25 for a smaller bin (140 litres), including delivery.

You can swap a standard black bin for a smaller one free of charge. If you would like to swap a small black bin for a standard one there is a charge of £25.

If you feel that you need more than one black bin this might be possible in certain circumstances. Contact customer services for more information.

Green bins and brown sacks

It is not normally possible to have more than one green bin. If you have more compostable waste than you can fit into your green bin or six brown sacks, you can take it to one of the large recycling centres at Milton or Thriplow.

Alternatively you could home compost much of the waste.

If you have brown sack collections, up to six sacks will be collected at one time. Please clearly write your house number on the sacks so that the collection crew can supply you with replacement sacks.

Replacement green bins are provided free of charge.

Blue bins and recycling boxes

You may use either a blue bin or recycling boxes for your recycling, but the council will not empty both from the same property. Please use the recycling points for occasional extra recycling that will not fit in your bin.

If you regularly have too much recycling to fit in your blue bin you may request an additional blue bin if you have space to store it off the pavement. Please check first that you are not including items in your blue bin which we can not currently recycle e.g. plastics other than bottles.

Replacement or additional blue bins and recycling boxes are provided free of charge.
