Dog fouling is one of the most contentious issues relating to dogs, and at some stage everyone has been inconvenienced by stepping into the mess. Cambridge City Council has adopted and enforces the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, which makes it an offence for any one in charge of a dog to allow it to foul on any land within the City unless they clear it up.
The Dog Warden patrols parks, recreation grounds, open spaces and streets within the City to increase people's awareness of the requirement to clear up after their pets. Owners who fail to clear up will be prosecuted and could face a fine of up to £1,000.
NOTE : A public place includes any open land, road, footpath or grass verge. It is no defence to say that you had nothing to clean up with - so always carry a poop scoop!
Someone lets their dog foul near to my house, what should I do?
If you know who the person is then you should contact the Dog Warden and give him the name and address of the offender.
You must be sure that you have actually seen them allow their dog to foul and fail to clear up, it is not sufficient to assume that a person walks that way each day so it must be their dog!
The Dog Warden may also ask for a brief description of the dog, the owner or a car registration number of the offender. If they walk at a regular time each day the Dog Warden can attempt to patrol the area at these times.
This information will enable the Dog Warden to make enquiries and take the necessary action against the offender.
