Working with computers

Where problems do occur they are generally caused by the way the VDU is used

  • Do you do regular work with computers?

Only a small proportion of Visual Display Unit (VDU) users suffer ill health as a result of their work. Where problems do occur they are generally caused by the way the VDU is used. Problems can be avoided by the way you use your VDU and workstation.

Some users suffer aches and pains in their hands, wrists, arms, neck, shoulders and back, especially after long periods of VDU use. Usually these disorders do not last, but in a few cases they may become persistent or even disabling. It is important to do something different for 5 minutes every half an hour.

The law requires employers to minimise the risk in VDU work by ensuring that the workplace is well designed and suits the user; this involves an assessment of the workstation. An assessment is required for employees who habitually use VDU's as a significant part of their normal work.

Employers should also offer eyesight tests for all habitual users. If spectacles are needed for VDU work then the employer should pay for the cost of basic ones for VDU use.

There is a free leaflet with more information. Single copies are available from the City Council or for larger numbers contact the HSE.
