City
Centre Management recently conducted a business forum to find out what issues really matter to the people working and living
in Cambridge.
Many stakeholders took part in the forum and from the views expressed we have developed an action plan involving the following projects.
Love Cambridge Shopping Guide and Map
City Centre Management has teamed up with Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridge Retail Park, Lion Yard, John Lewis, The Grafton and Green Wheels Pedicab Tours to create a free, handy-sized shopping and access guide to the city – outlining its 17 shopping areas with an emphasis on highlighting its markets and many independent shops.
We have produced 120,000 copies and have distributed them at locations including:
- London’s Kings Cross and Liverpool Street stations
- Stansted airport
- Tourist Information Centres
- Little Chef restaurants
- Doctors surgeries
- Dentists
- Libraries
- Park & Ride sites
Go visit Cambridge guide
Following previous success we will again sponsor the Go visit Cambridge guide.
This has been an excellent way of promoting Cambridge throughout the summer months while raising the profile of City Centre Management amongst a large, local consumer audience.
Cambridge Business Against Crime Scheme (CAMBAC)
This is a membership organisation developed in response to requests from businesses throughout the city for a mechanism to manage and reduce business crime.
With funding from The Grafton and John Lewis and support from the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and City Centre Management, CAMBAC is a exciting initiative with real powers to benefit every business. These powers include:
- Reducing the opportunities for offenders to commit crime
- Empowering businesses to protect staff from acts of physical violence and verbal abuse
- Targeting persistent criminals and troublemakers by shared intelligence and circulating police photographs
- Operating an Exclusion Notice Scheme to exclude persistent offenders
- Providing a dedicated CAMBAC team focussing on business crime
Wayfinding
City Centre Management is playing a key role as part of a stakeholder team created
to improve the way people are directed on foot around the city. Working with consultants specialising in wayfinding, the team
have already undertaken an audit of all existing directional signage and as a result have proposed a pedestrian signage strategy
for the city centre.
Once completed, the various areas that make up the city centre will be better linked – namely,
The Grafton area with the new Grand Arcade and Christ’s Lane developments and the historic core.
The style of signage
will be totally sympathetic to the Cambridge historic environment both in terms of design and materials used. A trial scheme
is due to be installed later this year.
City News
To ensure city centre businesses are kept up-to-date on current projects of City Centre Management and developments across the city. City News is produced 3 times a year and distributed to over 3000 addresses. We are also looking to produce an e-mail database to keep people up-to-date in between our newsletters. To receive our latest news, please e-mail emma.thornton@cambridge.gov.uk
Christmas 2007
City Centre Management is co-ordinating a range of activity with a number of stakeholders to ensure Christmas
this year in the city is a truly spectacular and memorable event.
We are delighted to announce John Lewis as our
headline sponsor for Christmas in Cambridge this year. Work is currently underway to improve the quality of Christmas lights
across the city centre and hopefully introducing lights into areas where previously there have been none.
The switch-on
event itself on Sunday 18 November will have a much greater community focus involving local dance, drama and music groups
in the performance programme.
Q103 are our radio partner and in addition to hosting the switch-on programme will
be running 2 weeks of publicity promoting the event and a high profile public fundraising campaign for the Christmas lights
‘Light up Cambridge, light up lives’.
