Councillor Sheila Stuart has been a member of the council since 2004, when she was first elected to represent Trumpington ward.
Sheila has served on the Environment, Licensing and Planning Committees, as well as Standards Committee, and as a member of the Employment Appeals panels. She has also chaired the Public Art Steering Group.
She served as Executive Councillor for Community Development and Health from 2006 to 2009. Her civic roles include her service as a Ceremonial Bailiff in 2006/07 and as Deputy Mayor in 2009/10.
Originally from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Sheila’s first political involvement was at the University of Oregon where she served as a member of the Incidental Fee Committee (the budget-setting body for student fees) and later as Budget Director. Sheila later worked as an intern to a local Congresswoman in Eugene, Oregon, and then as paid committee staff in the 1985 Legislative Session to the House Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs in the Oregon House of Representatives.
Sheila moved to Cambridge in 1991 from Portland, Oregon, and has worked as an accountant with the local independent firm Peters Elworthy and Moore since 2007, having previously worked as a financial administrator for Toby Churchill Limited, a local firm which manufactures electronic communication aids for the disabled.
Sheila’s husband, Bruce, is a self-employed architect, and her daughter Lucy, 16, attends Long Road Sixth Form College.
Bruce and Sheila enjoy travelling, hiking, gardening, and reading, as well as silversmithing when time permits.
Sheila has chosen to support two local charities during her mayoral year:
- dHIVerse - a local charity dedicated to reducing the spread of HIV, supporting people who are HIV positive and their family and friends, and promoting good sexual health for all, including better sexual health information for teenagers and young people
- Cambridge St Raphael Club - a social club whose aims are to provide a better quality of life for disabled people in the Cambridgeshire area through cheerful company, entertainment, crafts and outings - they are fundraising towards a new ambulance for all users of the Hester Adrian Centre
