Statement of accounts

The council prepares an annual statement of accounts to give electors, local taxpayers, members of the council and other interested parties clear information about its finances.

The statement summarises:

  • the cost of services provided by the council in the year
  • how services were paid for
  • the council's assets and liabilities at the year end

The format of the accounts is prescribed by the Code of Practice on Local Authority Accounting in the United Kingdon, commonly referred to as ‘The Code’.

The statements are externally audited each year. The audit of the accounts for the year ending 31 March 2011 has been concluded.

A brief annual report, outlining the council's services and summarising the council’s performance is presented alongside the statement of accounts.

The 2010-11 annual report and audited statement of accounts are available to download:

Local government electors of the city of Cambridge may also, on application to the Head of Accounting Services, Lion House, Lion Yard, Cambridge, inspect and make copies of or purchase the Statement of Accounts between the hours of 9am and 5pm (Monday to Thursday) and 9am–4pm (Friday).

A summary of the accounts, that is designed to be easier to interpret, is also available:

The auditors produce an annual letter to members summarising their main findings following the conclusion of the audit.

Read the letter to members for 2010–11 [PDF].
