Become a candidate

What to do if you want to stand as a candidate in a local election

A die with the word yes instead of a number

Citizens of Britain and the Republic of Ireland may stand for election, as may citizens of the European Union or the Commonwealth.

If you would like to stand as a candidate for elections to the local authority you must be at least 18 years old on the day of nomination.

You must also meet at least one of the following four qualifications:

  • you are a registered elector for the local authority area
  • you have lived in the area for the whole of the previous 12 months
  • you have occupied, as owner or tenant, any land or premises in the area for the whole of the previous 12 months
  • your principal or only place of work for the whole of the previous 12 months has been in the area

Any person wishing to stand as a candidate will need to complete the following paperwork:

  • nomination paper
  • consent to nomination
  • appointment of election agent

If you wish to receive a set of nomination papers, please email elections@cambridge.gov.uk or telephone 01223 457048.

There is a range of disqualifications that can prevent a person from standing as candidate at a local election. Further details of such disqualifications are shown on the nomination forms.

Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission has produced a comprehensive guide for candidates at local elections.

A copy will be provided with the nomination pack; it can also be found on the Commission’s website.

Political parties

If you are a candidate for a registered political party you will also need to submit:

  • certificate of authorisation
  • request to use the party emblem
