Travelling into Cambridge city centre by car is not recommended and a number of alternatives are available.

Cycling

Being a compact and flat city, cycling and walking are quick, cheap and pollution-free methods of travel. Cycling and walking are also great ways to exercise.

There is free, secure cycle parking at Park Street and at the Grand Arcade shopping centre. Lockers are available for hire.

Travelling by bus

Many people now travel into the city on the Park & Ride bus service. This operates frequent buses from five car park locations on the city outskirts into the city centre.

There is an excellent Citi bus network around the city, including a night bus on Friday and Saturday nights. There are also good services into the city from the main local towns. Find routes on the Transport Direct website.

Concessionary bus passes for the over 60s and the disabled are available from your district council and give free travel on off peak local bus services throughout England.

Travelling by rail

The rail station (map) is just south of the city centre. There are regular buses and taxis available from the station, and journey time to the city centre is usually five to 10 minutes.

The National Rail website provides information on routes and fares, and you can check train schedules and buy tickets.

Walking

The walkit website provides walking directions and a map showing the quickest walking routes around Cambridge. You can also get directions and a map for routes which minimise air pollution. Plus it will tell you the carbon emissions saved and the calories burned!

Travelling for disabled people

Anyone with a Blue Badge can park in any pay and display parking bay, as well as in any residents' or disabled spaces free of charge.

Car parking

There is limited parking in the city centre. Signs on the main roads into the city display how many spaces are available at each car park.

Time restricted pay and display on-street parking is available in some locations, and limited free on-street parking is available in the evenings.

The City Circle is a free bus service that operates Monday to Saturday every 15 minutes.

It does a circular route and serves the Grafton Centre, Jesus Lane, Trinity Street, Market Square, Corpus Christi and Downing Street.
