There is space for 70 residential boats to moor along the river Cam, including 15 wide-beam boats of 2.15 metres (7.06 feet) or more.

Mooring for residential boats is permitted alongside three commons in Cambridge: Jesus Green, Midsummer Common, and Stourbridge Common.

Licence costs

The standard annual cost of a residential boat mooring licence is £913.10, equivalent to a Council Tax Band A property. The length and width of a boat do not affect the cost of the licence.

A 25 per cent discount is applicable for boats with only one occupant. Owners who are registered students or pensioners, or who receive means-tested benefits, are entitled to a 50 per cent reduction.

Licences can be paid for in full each year or by monthly Direct Debit.

Alternatively, download and complete a printable application form and return it to the Streets and Open Spaces team, Mill Road Depot, Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 2AZ.

When you submit a completed licence application form, you must adhere to the terms and conditions on the application form.

Waiting list

There are currently more than 80 names on the waiting list for a residential mooring licence, with an estimated two- to four-year wait on the narrow-bean list and over 20 years on the wide-beam list.

After applying you will be added to the waiting list for a space and given a number representing your place in the queue.

Licence renewal

Re-application packs will be sent to licence holders in early February of each year.

Forms and supporting documents must be returned by the end of the first week of March.
