Prison fence

Properties left empty by prisoners are exempt from Council Tax (Class D).

A person detained in a prison, hospital or another place by order of a court can get a Council Tax discount from their usual residence.

However this discount does not cover those in prison for non-payment of fines or non-payment of Council Tax.

We will need the following information:

  • Name of person
  • Name and address of place of detention
  • Date taken into custody
  • Expected date of release
  • Prison Service number (where known)
